Review - The Queen's Conjuror - Benjamin Woolley

Visit bookshop

This is the story of John Dee, amongst many other things conjuror to Elizabeth the first, hence the title. Dee was a remarkable mix of scientist and magician. He was certainly no charlatan - he took his work very seriously. But this book reveals that he was anything but the manipulative, dark individual that history has often portrayed him as.

A dedicated family man, Dee seems to have been duped by a remarkable Irish conman who claimed to see many spirits and produced the 'language of angels' that Dee transcribed. Fascinating stuff.
