Review - Our Cosmic Habitat - Martin Rees

Stephen Hawking may have the the crowd-pulling name, but this alternative to Hawking's Universe in a Nutshell has a lot to recommend it. Instead of trying to be all things to all readers (including a coffee table book) as Hawking's weighty tome does, this is a straightforward introduction to an up-to-date view of the nature of the universe.
Rees is the UK's Astronomer Royal, so well equipped technically, but he also has a good turn of phrase and makes the subject readable and interesting. Perhaps the only criticism is that this isn't really a popular science book - it's more a concise and easy to read introduction to current cosmology. I make the distinction because you will get no feeling for the people and stories behind the science from this book. But don't let that put you off.
If you want a clear, understandable and entertaining introduction to the universe we live in (something surely we all should want), a guide to what dark matter is all about, speculation on multiple universes and much more, this is the book for you.
