Review - Animal Baths - Beth Fielding

Visit bookshop

How many different ways can animal get clean? Beth Fielding is on a mission to show us that it's quite a few. We get a whole host of possibilities from the basic water, through mud, dust and grooming to that perennial children's favourite, poo. Yes, vultures use poo to help clean themselves.

It's quite interesting and fun, but somehow doesn't have quite the same impact as some of the other strongly focussed books from the same publisher like Bug Butts. That really grabbed the attention, where baths are a little less exciting. Nonetheless, bath time is an important part of a child's ritual (people baths are included in the book), and as such a familiar and useful reference point.

I wasn't overwhelmed by the illustrations, which were a bit too arty and not depictive enough for a science book. Certainly interesting and well worth adding to a school library, but doesn't quite make it into the top rank of children's popular science.
