The Global Warming Survival Kit, by this site's editor, Brian Clegg, is an excellent collection of tips and practical suggestions to cope with all that climate change is going to throw at us. It starts with a frightening reminder of just how bad things are on the global warming front - and how much worse they are likely to get - then goes on to provide helpful guidance on dealing with power cuts, food and water shortages, wild weather from floods to drought and wildfires, keeping safe, and retaining our humanity when civilization seems to be breaking down.

Each section has a quick start list at the beginning to jump in to specific tips for a particular requirement, the main guidance, notes on resources and checklists. At the back there is a reference section with further reading and an eclectic set of websites. Whether you need to keep things cool without power and want to construct a Blue Peter style, DIY cooler, or you are faced with getting out of a building that's surrounded by rioters, there's help for you here.

It works well as a gift book, partly because the whole "survival guide" thing usually does go down well, but also because there's a frightening possibility that it might have to be used for real, and if that's the case it's going to be a helpful thing to have around. The UK edition is an unusual plastic coated paperback (better than it sounds) that looks more like a hardback than a paperback, while the Canadian edition is hardback.

There's not that much science after the first, dramatic chapter on what's likely to happen with climate change, but the rest is very practical and readable - and fits ideally into our gift recommendations.
