Four Way Interview - Ronald Mallett -
August 2007
Our four-way interviews give a quick insight into the current thinking of a popular science author.
Ronald Mallett is professor of physics at the University of Connecticut. In his book, The Time Traveller, he describes his motivation to become involved in science, and his fascinating work that may have brought him close to practical time travel.
Why science?
Science is mankind's attempt to make sense of the universe using observation, tentative explanation, and experimentation. In my particular case, after my father's death I felt as though the universe was out of control. Science gave me a feeling that I could bring control into my world by building a time machine to see my father again.
Why this book?
I felt that people needed to know the time travel is possible based on Einstein's theories of relativity. THE TIME TRAVELER is the story of my journey of self and scientific discovery from death of my father to my ultimate breakthrough in realizing that light can be used to control time and allow us to travel to the past as well as the future. Many people do not realize that science is a very human endeavor motivated by many of the passions that underlie art, literature, and music. This book shows the role that science plays in satisfying our longing to bring order and predictability into our lives by gaining a deeper understanding of the universe.
What's next?
As a theoretical physicist I have developed the necessary physical equations based on Einstein's theory to show that time travel into the past as possible. In conjunction with my experimental colleague, the necessary design for the experiments based on my theoretical results has been realized. The implementation of the experiments requires adequate funding. Presently that funding is being sought. Just to carry out the initial experiments will require at least $250,000 (£125,000).
What's exciting you at the moment?
I'm excited at the moment by the overwhelmingly enthusiastic response of the public to THE TIME TRAVELER. I believe that this public awareness of my work will ultimately lead to the realization of my dream of building a time machine.
